Well iTunes itself doesn't use the XML, it uses the main library database (iTunes Library.itl or just iTunes Library) and the XML file is for other apps to read data from iTunes such as the WP7 Connector.

Ok, so let's blow away everything Windows Phone related from the Mac and make sure the Mac is running okay as well. Please note that when copying file paths to put into the Go to folder box, don't forget to copy the ~ at the beginning of any of them that have it! This is important! /Library/Application Supportis very different than ~/Library/Application Support
  1. Disconnect your phone and close iTunes
  2. Open a Finder window and from the menubar, go Go>Go to Folder
  3. Put in /Applications and click Ok.
  4. Find Windows Phone 7 Connector.app and drag it to the Trash
  5. from the menubar, go Go>Go to Folder
  6. Put in ~/Music/iTunes and click Ok
  7. Find iTunes Library.xml and drag it to the Trash
  8. from the menubar, go Go>Go to Folder
  9. Put in~/Library/Application Support and click Ok.
  10. Find the folder Windows Phone 7 Connector and drag it to the Trash.
  11. Empty the Trash. Are there any errors when emptying the Trash?
  12. From the  menu in the top left of your screen, click Software Update.
  13. Install all updates in Software Update and restart the Mac
  14. Open a Finder window and from the menubar, go Go>Go to Folder
  15. Put in /Applications/Utilities and click Ok.
  16. Find Keychain Access.app and double-click it to open it
  17. On the left-hand sidebar, click 'login'
  18. Find anything Windows Phone 7 connector related in this group and delete it (I had two private keys and a certificate)
  19. Restart your Mac
  20. When restarting your Mac, hold down the Command and R keys. This should put the Mac in Recovery Mode
  21. When the Mac has finished booting into recovery mode, click 'Utilities' from the menubar and then click 'Disk Utility.
  22. From the left-hand sidebar click your Mac disk. Don't click the entire hard drive (usually called the name of the manufacturer, such as Hitachi), click the actual drive Mac OS X is installed on (usually called 'Macintosh HD')
  23. On the right-hand side of the Disk Utility window, click the First Aid tab.
  24. Click Repair Disk
  25. When Repair Disk is done, click Repair Permissions
  26. When Repair Permissions is done, restart the Mac and login to it normally
  27. Open iTunes. Go get a cup of coffee or have dinner or something while it rebuilds iTunes library.xml. Again, give it at least 30 minutes to ensure it's completely rebuilt.
  28. Download the Windows Phone 7 Connector from the Mac App Store
  29. Open it and try syncing the phone again.

So what have we done with this absurdly long list?

  • We've blown away the XML and the Connector's settings again, as well as anything WP7 related.
  • We've emptied the Trash to ensure these files are gone
  • We've made sure the Mac is up-to-date
  • We've made sure the Mac hard drive is in top shape
  • We've downloaded a fresh copy of the Connector

Another thing to check is that these songs actually do exist. Try playing them in iTunes to ensure iTunes does play them properly.


After this, I can't possibly imagine something going wrong. :/
