Plumbing License Requirements
Plumbing Contractors: Any person holding a Master Plumber's License issued in the Virgin Islands may, upon application to the Board, be granted a Plumbing Contractor's License without the necessity of taking a written examination if he meets all the other requirements. West Virginia Law requires the certification of plumbers. Effective January 1, 2009, no plumber may perform or offer to perform plumbing work in West Virginia without a plumber license issued by the West Virginia Division of Labor. Working without a proper license may result in the issuance of a cease and desist order. Plumbing Licensing. This section primarily covers the Limited Licensed Plumber (LLP) license requirements which is required in many counties to perform work on a project where the cost is less than $25,000. The LLP license is issued to the individual passing the LLP trade exam.

Journeyperson:
The requirements to qualify for the journeyperson license examination shall be completion of a registered apprenticeship program or equivalent experience and training.
Contractor:
The requirements to qualify for the contractor license examination shall be two (2) years as a properly licensed journeyperson.

- You must be 18 or older.
- You must have at least 4 years of experience as a plumber. This may be proven with wage stubs, tax returns and certifications by other master plumbers. Up to 3 years of that experience may be provided with proof of a qualifying degree. You should also have at least 1 year of experience as a foreman.[2]
- You must pass a criminal background check. Not all people with criminal records will be denied. This is at the discretion of the licensing board. You must submit your fingerprints.[3]
- You must be able to prove your financial stability. This may be provided with bank statements, FICO credit scores and/or tax returns. You will be required to show proof of a bond.[4]
- You must have both property damage insurance and public liability insurance. Although the amounts are determined by the board, they generally require that you have a bodily injury policy up to $100,000 and a property damage policy up to $25,000. You are required to provide worker's compensation insurance for all employees.
