Mobile Game Developer Outfit PDAMill has decided to make their entire Palm OS game catalogue available for free. The company recently decided to discontinue development on Palm OS, and are now making their line of high quality titles available fully unlocked and free of charge.
Games include: Arvale: Journey of Illusion, Snails, GameBox Solitaire I & II, GameBox Classic, GameBox Gems and GameBox Asia. The games all require Palm OS 5 or higher and a high resolution screen. Most titles also support 320x480 mode as well. PDAMill notes that the games come without warranty and support and warns that they may not be compatible with all devices. Why didn't PDAMail continue to sell them?
I've just tried Snails, Solitaire and Solitaire II on my Treo 680. All of them work perfectly. Does anyone run into any compatibility problem with other games yet?All those free titles do add a lot of values to Palm OS devices, including the latest Palm Centro!

I just found one limitation of the games (e.g. Snails) on a Treo. When I got a phone call at the middle of the game, the game will just quit.Normally a Palm OS game will quit, save its game states and restore it upon the game starts again. Unfortunately, Snails do not follow this Palm OS game guidelines..the game simply quits and I have to start from the beginning again. This will work fine on a Palm OS PDA, but probably not good on a Treo unless you turn off the phone's radio. :)

I know I should be wringing my hands over the slow death of the PalmOS but it's I'm too busy playing solitaire. There seems to be a growing trend of developers abandoning the PalmOS and giving away their applications for free. First Dmitry Grinberg did it and made SkinUI free. I'd actually already bought a copy of SkinUI but it was a hassle getting it registered every time I got a new device or hard reset an existing one and did a reinstall of all my apps. Now, I can just install it on any device I feel like. The same thing applies to Red Mercury games where I have to re-register them from time to time. Now with these new games, it was just install and run - no registration necessary. I had never heard of PDAMill before either but I know who they are now and will definitely take a look at their products if they ever return to programming for the PalmOS.Mourn all you like-you're right to do so-but there's a hell of a silver lining hear.
