  • A few words on my take of the thematic significance of Kaworu, because I know I did not get it the first time I watched this episode—All throughout the series, Shinji is looking for some kind of validation, especially from his father. However, by episode 24, all of his previous sources of that is gone.

A young Asuka is running home. She's happy because she's been selected as an Eva pilot and wants to tell it to her mother, believing everything will now be okay. She opens the door to her home, only to discover her mother hanging in a noose from the ceiling. With the sound of a slap, the narrative cuts forward to the more recent past; In Misato's kitchen, Shinji angrily and desperately tries to tell Asuka that Kaji is dead and won't be coming back. With a face resigned in disbelief she accuses him of lying.

In the present, Asuka lies naked in a bathtub in a ruined and abandoned house on the outskirts of Tokyo-3, with her clothes neatly folded on a chair beside her. She weakly mutters that with a synch rate of 0 she is no longer qualified to be the Second Child; because of this, she believes no one will look at her now and feels she has no reason to live. Someone then enters the ruin and asks, 'Are you Asuka Langley Soryu?' Inside NERV's headquarters, Hyuga gets a phone call about the recovery of Asuka. Misato comments that it is unusual for Section 2 to lose track of someone and then be unable to find them for a whole week, and since the finding of Asuka coincides with the arrival of the Fifth Child, she speculates that they did it on purpose.

Back in his room, Shinji contemplates the events and revelations of the past few days, and concludes that there definitely is some sort of connection between Rei, his mother, and the strange presence in Unit-01, but he can't figure out what his father is planning to do with them.

Gendo now appears before Ritsuko in her holding cell. She laments the recent death of the cat she left in her grandmother's care, but he ignores her grief and asks her why she destroyed the Dummy System. 'I destroyed Rei,' she angrily answers and tells him she no longer feels anything for him and he can just do 'whatever you want with my body!' He coldly states 'You disappoint me', and she grievously answers that he had no expectations of her to begin with, before he leaves her in the dark. 'What am I supposed to do, Mother?' she whispers to the darkness.

Shinji watches the sunset over the lake that now covers the ruins of Toyko-3. He realizes that he has no one he can talk to. Touji and Kensuke has been evacuated to someplace else, he doesn't know where Asuka is, and he finds himself unable to face Misato or Rei, being too scared of both. He then hears someone humming Beethoven's Ode to Joy, and discovers a strange gray haired boy about his own age sitting on a chunk of debris nearby. The boy muses out loud that singing is a great way to enrich the soul, calling it 'the crowning achievement of the civilization that the Lilim created.' He then turns towards Shinji and asks 'Don't you feel the same? Shinji Ikari?' Shinji is surprised the boy knows his name, but the boy tells him that his name is more well-known than he realizes. The boy then introduces himself as Kaworu Nagisa, the Fifth Child, and insists right from the get-go that Shinji calls him by his first name. Kaworu's display of openness surprises Shinji, and he can't help but blush a little as he asks Kaworu to call him by his first name too.

Hyuga meets covertly with Misato in her car, where he gives her what little information he could find on Kaworu. He was send directly by the Committee and his background is just as blank as Rei's; the only thing that is written down is a birthday, which just so happens to be the same day as the Second Impact. Misato concludes that he is obviously planning something. Hyuga also reveals that he even did a little extra work and hacked into the Intelligence Department's database and found out where Ritsuko is being held. He then eagerly asks Misato what their next move regarding Kaworu is going to be, but Misato, amused by his eagerness, tells him to remain calm for now. They will have to see what the Fifth Child is capable of first.

The next day, Kaworu participates in a synch test. He scores an abnormally high synch rate with Unit-02, even without replacing the core of the Eva, which only raises Misato's suspicion of him. After the test Kaworu meets up with Rei, who instantly and uncharacteristically becomes suspicious of him. 'You're the same as me,' he tells her and refers to the fact that they both have taken the form of Lilim. 'Who are you?' Rei asks him distrustfully. Gendo is informed in his office by Fuyutsuki that Kaworu has made contact with Rei, and that the Magi is working hard to come up with information on him.

Back at her apartment, Misato ponders on the lack of information on Kaworu, before noticing that Shinji hasn't returned home, and that she and Pen Pen are alone in the apartment. 'I've failed as a guardian,' she realizes.

At the Central Dogma station, Shinji is waiting for Kaworu. Kaworu arrives and asks why he is hanging around, and Shinji tells him that he hasn't felt like going home recently. Kaworu then asks him to accompany him in the showers, where they can talk more. Shinji agrees hesitantly. As the two relax in the public bath, Kaworu shares his musings on the nature of mankind with Shinji, finding the paradox of people's need for companionship despite their fear of getting too close to others interesting, and makes several advances towards him, eventually culminating in him placing his hand on top of Shinji's. This shocks and embarrass Shinji, but he doesn't shy away from Kaworu. The lights in the bath house turns off, and Shinji suggests they better head home and go to bed. 'Together?' asks Kaworu. 'Oh, no! I think there's probably a room ready for you. A separate one,' Shinji quickly answers. After a brief, awkward pause, Kaworu muses that humans constantly feel pain in their hearts, and therefore they often feel that to live is also to suffer as the heart is so very sensitive to pain. He then smiles at Shinji, and says that he can tell that he is a delicate and fragile person, but he holds him in high regard for it. Shinji asks him what he means by that, and Kaworu answers: 'It means, I love you.'

SELEE gathers for another meeting. They have realized that Gendo has turned NERV against them, and declares that they must get the facility back at any cost before the promised day comes. Keel declares that Gendo will bear the responsibility for his malfeasance towards SEELE. Inside the Eva cage, Gendo talks to Unit 01; he tells it that with the Lance of Longinus safely out of the way, nothing will hinder them any more. He declares that as soon as the last Angel is defeated 'our wish will be fulfilled.' He addresses the Eva as 'Yui' and tells her to wait just a little longer. A shot of his ungloved hand reveals the embryonic Adam fused with his flesh. In her apartment, Rei considers her existence, wondering why she is alive again and for what and who's purpose. She then ponders Kaworu's words and realizes that he is right; she senses that the two of them are indeed the same, but she can't explain why. Meanwhile, Misato tells Pen Pen that life in Tokyo-3 has gotten too dangerous, and that she will send him to live with Hikari's family.

Inside Kaworu's apartment in NERV HQ, Shinji is sleeping over, but he has settled for sleeping on the floor. Kaworu asks if they should switch places, but Shinji tells him he's fine where he is. He starts telling Kaworu about his problems, wondering all the while why he is sharing them with him. Kaworu smiles sincerely, and tells him: 'I might have been born to meet you.'

The next morning Kaworu goes to the lake shore. Several SEELE monoliths appear and start briefing him on his mission, telling him that Gendo is trying to acquire the power of God and must be stopped, and that as the spawn of Adam he must remove mankind, the spawn of Lilith, from Earth. Meanwhile Misato spies on the meeting from a mountain some distance away. Unable to see the monoliths, it appears to her as if Kaworu talks to himself. At one point Misato notices that Kaworu looks directly at her, but dismisses the possibility. Meanwhile Kaworu finishes the briefing; 'All will be as the Lilim direct it,' he comments laconically.

Misato meets up with Hyuga again. Through data he has stolen off Maya, it is revealed that Kaworu can apparently alter his synch rate as he sees fit. Misato decides that her best possibility for some answers comes from Ritsuko and visits her in her cell. Ritsuko warns her that their conversation will be recorded, but Misato says she doesn't care and demands answers. Ritsuko then tells her that the Fifth Child is very possibly the last Angel. Meanwhile Kaworu has entered the Evas' holding cage. He starts levitating upwards, until he comes face to face with Unit 02. 'Come with me, Adam's alter ego and servant of the Lilim,' he says to the EVA, and in response the creature's eyes light up and it starts moving.

Alarms and confusion breaks out in the control room as Unit-02 starts smashing through the barriers down the shaft to Terminal Dogma. It is quickly confirmed that Asuka still lies sedated in the hospital, so it is concluded that the Fifth Child must be behind it. A blue pattern is detected, and Gendo and Fuyutsuki are shocked by this, not expecting SEELE to actually send an Angel to the Geofront. Gendo deduces that SEELE is once again trying to advance the prophecy. He tells the personnel that the 17th Angel must be kept out of Terminal Dogma by any means necessary. Meanwhile SEELE expects Gendo to send Unit-01 to solve the problem, and hopes that it will succeed, as it will help their scenario.

Shinji, now sitting in Unit-01, refuses to believe that Kaworu is an Angel. But Misato tells him that it is the truth and sends him out. Descending down the shaft he curses Kaworu, accusing him of betraying him, just like his father. He catches up with him, and Kaworu starts attacking him with Unit-02. Shinji mutters a quick 'Sorry, Asuka,' before drawing Unit 01's knife to counter-attack. During the fight Kaworu shares more of his musings on mankind and their strong urge to survive, stating that they are even willing to create the Evas, copies of Adam, an entity bend on their destruction, to defend themselves, something he can't understand; by all rights mankind should abhor the very idea of the Evas. Engaged in combat, Shinji frantically asks Kaworu why he doing all this, begging him to stop. Kaworu answers that he is in a way like the Evas; he was also born from Adam's flesh. He reveals it is why he can control Unit-02. In Shinji attempts to fend off Unit-02's attacks, Unit-01's knife accidentally slips, colliding with an AT Field generated by Kaworu. This prompts Kaworu to tell Shinji about the nature of the A.T. Field, revealing that humans also generate them, and that it is what keeps them separated from each other, calling it 'the wall that everyone has in their heart.' Meanwhile, as the fighting Evas continues their descend down the main shaft, Misato tells Hyuga to prepare the base's self-destruction program and to initiate it if the readings on Unit-01 goes blank. Hyuga says he understands, declaring it to be better a option than letting the Earth suffer a Third Impact. 'I'm sorry,' Misato tells him, to which Hyuga answers 'It's okay, as long as I'm with you.'

Down in the shaft, Shinji and Kaworu have reached the last barrier to Terminal Dogma. Kaworu then creates the strongest A.T. Field ever recorded to smash the barrier. This also knocks out all electronic equipment in the area, disabling the self-destruct mechanism. The fighting Evas land in a pool of LCL at the bottom of the shaft, while Kaworu continues to move towards his goal. Shinji tries to stop him, but is held back by Unit-02. Kaworu now opens Heaven's Door, the last barrier to the room of the crucified giant. Suddenly an A.T. Field of equal power to Kaworu's appears and channels it out, but it is not a blue pattern. It is revealed to be generated by Rei, who has descended into Terminal Dogma through another shaft.

Kaworu now stands face to face with the crucified giant and identifies it as Adam, wondering if he really wishes to merge with it and destroy all of mankind. However, upon closer inspection, Kaworu realizes that the giant is actually Lilith. Just then, Shinji and Unit-01, having defeated Unit-02, enter the room. He grabs Kaworu who does not resist. Kaworu thanks Shinji for stopping him; 'It is my destiny to continue to live, even if it may result in the destruction of humanity,' he explains to him, but adds that 'I can also die here. Life and death are of equal value to me.' Kaworu states that, in the end, dying by your own will is the truest form of freedom there is, and, as such, it is his wish to die, so that mankind may go on living, and he finishes by telling Shinji to 'Erase me from this world.' Anguished and scared, Shinji answers: 'I don't understand what you are saying!' Kaworu takes a look up at Rei and smiles wistfully before he looks back at Shinji. 'Only one life form can be chosen to evade the destruction and inherit the future. And you are not the existence that should die,' he explains, before he thanks Shinji for giving his life meaning. After hesitating for a long time, Shinji obliges with Kaworu's wish and crushes him in Unit-01's hand. Kaworu's head separates from his destroyed body and falls into the pool of LCL.

Genesis

As the operation is now over, Gendo watches as Kaworu's blood is washed off Unit-01's hand. Rei stands beside him, in the place of Ritsuko.

At the lake shore, Shinji is in sorrow over the death of Kaworu, telling Misato that he was the only one who ever told him that he loved him, noticing that no one had ever said such kind words to him before. He remarks that Kaworu was, in a way, like him and Rei, but also a better person than himself and that he loved him too. He wishes that Kaworu had survived instead of him. Misato tells Shinji that only those with the will to live gets to survive, and Kaworu with his wish to die therefore willingly gave up his survival and chose a false hope instead, and that he therefore did nothing wrong in killing him. '..How can you be so cruel?' Shinji asks her, utterly crushed.

Tropes:

  • Call-Back: Kaworu comments that the reason why he can control Unit 02 so easily is because the soul inside it has shut itself away. It seems that the Mind Rape didn't just affect Asuka.
  • Either/Or Title: The English title being 'The Beginning and End, or 'Knockin' on Heaven's Door'.
  • Leave the Camera Running: Shinji's hesitation to kill Kaworu is shown to us as a single frame of Unit 01 holding Kaworu, accompanied by somber music. This goes for two minutes. It works (YMMV on that, though).
  • Mysterious Stranger: All that's known about the Fifth Child is that he was born on the day of the Second Impact. Everyone (save Shinji) becomes wary, and Misato spends all of her time trying to figure him out.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: The normally indifferent and stoic Rei immediately puts her guard up around Karowu and eyes him with suspicion.
  • The Reveal: Two. Kaworu is the final angel, and the giant in Terminal Dogma is not Adam, but rather Lilith.
  • Shoo Out the Clowns: Pen Pen's scene.
  • Title Drop: When asked what Kaworu is by Misato, Ritsuko answers: 'He is likely the final messenger.'

Overview

Asuka sinks into deep depression after Arael's mental probing, and is unable to pilot when the new Angel Armisael arrives. Armisael begins physically fusing with Eva-00 and threatens to do the same to Eva-01, prompting Rei to sacrifice herself to save Shinji, only to appear alive soon afterwards. Under threat by Misato, Ritsuko opens the door to a room in Terminal Dogma to reveal the dark truth about Rei Ayanami.

Synopsis

Neon Genesis Evangelion Characters

The episode begins with a recording of Kaji's voice telling Misato and Ritsuko that he's sorry. Shinji waits outside Misato's room with Pen Pen, not knowing how to help her.

Asuka has run away from home and is not coming to school, staying instead with Hikari Horaki and playing video games all day. At night, she tells Hikari how useless she feels, and Hikari tries to cheer her up by telling her she did her best[1].

Seele is furious with Gendo over the use of the Spear of Longinus, which is now heading for the moon, and plans to send Gendo another warning to keep him in line, stating that they need someone who knows the truth. Ritsuko receives a telephone call from her grandmother and learns that her cat, which has been in her grandmother's care, has died. She tells her grandmother that she will visit her mother's grave, since it has been over three years since she last visited. After the conversation ends, she says, 'So that child is dead'[2].

In a meeting with Seele, Gendo explains that it was his priority to destroy the Angel, not preserve the Spear, a statement at which the Russian committee member openly scoffs. Fuyutsuki calls, telling him an Angel is approaching, and Gendo leaves the meeting. Chairman Lorenz begins to seriously consider the possibility that Gendo intends to betray Seele.

Armisael[3] appears, having crossed over Goura. Rei is sent out in Eva-00, with Asuka as her backup. The Angel's unusual A.T. Field variations puzzle the Magi, and until the Angel's abilities are clear, a tense standoff is maintained. Rei is told to pull back and observe it, but the Angel changes shape and attacks the Eva. Shooting it with the sniper rifle is useless, and the Angel erodes the A.T. Field and begins biofusion with the Eva. A network of vein-like patterns grows over Rei's body, corresponding to the growth on her Eva. Misato launches Eva-02 and orders Asuka to lift off, but her synch level is so low she can't move her Eva. She is immediately withdrawn by Misato.

Soon, Rei feels the presence of someone else inside the Eva. She sees Armisael take her own form, and talk to her. Armisael shares her emotions with Rei who identifies them as loneliness. (Armisael didn't understand what she was feeling.) Armisael indicates to Rei that she (Rei) is lonely too. Rei actually cries, and is surprised to see her own tears. Armisael creates a monstrous growth from the Eva's back in which the shapes of all the previous Angels, her dead siblings, are visible, possibly trying to ressurect them to cure her own loneliness. Misato is horrified at the sight, and Gendo orders Eva-01 out of its freeze. Asuka remembers that Gendo refused to do the same for her, see Episode 22, and falls further into despair

Armisael attacks Eva-01 through its other end, destroying the pallet rifle. Shinji grabs Armisael, who begins fusing with his hands. When he stabs the Angel, it howls like Rei. To his utter horror, miniature Rei faces appear out of his biofused hands, telling him 'It hurts'. Armisael's end takes Rei's form, and caresses the Eva's face, causing veins to appear across it. Rei realizes that her desire is to be with Shinji, and proceeds to contain the Angel to save Shinji. Ignoring Gendo and Misato ordering her to leave the Eva, she sacrifices her life by self-destructing the Eva. The resulting huge explosion destroys most of the city, and the waters of Lake Ashinoko flood the impact site. At the moment of the explosion, Rei sees an image of Gendo's smiling face.

Ritsuko and a contamination squad scour the area; they find the Entry Plug containing Rei's chared remains and Ritsuko orders it to be salvaged.

Shinji is devastated by Rei's death, and Misato attempts to comfort him the only way she knows, by trying to initiate a sexual encouter[4][5]. Horrified, Shinji rejects her. Soon afterwards, Misato receives the news that Rei is alive and in hospital. Shinji meets Rei, who has no memory of self-destructing to save Shinji, and says, 'I think I am the third.'

Seele puts Ritsuko through torture and shame as she stands naked before the monoliths. The French member reveals that Gendo sent her in place of Rei. Enraged, she calls Shinji after her release and tells him to see her at once. Misato follows, with a gun. Ritsuko shows Shinji and Misato the room where Rei was born, and the Eva Graveyard. Finally, she shows them the dark secret of the Dummy System, the tank full of Rei bodies that serves as its core[6]. She destroys the Rei clones in full view of both of them, and then begs Misato to kill her. Misato refuses.

The third Rei, meanwhile, is inside her apartment, looking through her things. Upon finding her treasured Gendo's glasses she begins to cry, and as she has no memory of her fatal battle, wonders why her tears seem so familiar to her, as she has never seen them before.

Seele awaits the final Angel.

On-Air Version Differences

  • The battle with Armisael is much shorter. The 'Tower of Angels', the battle with Eva-01 and the scene of Eva-00 transforming into a giant glowing Rei are all absent.
  • Rei's animation is much more 'cartoonish' and less detailed. Her expressions may be considered more vacant and neutral.
  • Ritsuko's expression can also be considered more 'neutral', and the expressions and the subtle animations that hint at her emotional state after her release are missing.
  • There are far fewer rejected Evas in the Eva Graveyard, and the Rei tank is much smaller.

Analysis

Neon Genesis Evangelion Episode 24 Music

  • The sequence leading up to Rei's death uses imagery reflective of conception and pregnancy. When the Angel first breaches Eva-00, the monitors make sure to repeatedly display the word 'Penetration'; Rei blushes and convulses in a sexual manner. Once the Angel has mostly invaded the Eva, its belly begins to swell in a manner very remniscent of pregnancy. This imagery is juxtaposed with Rei's realization that she wants Shinji.

Neon Genesis Evangelion Episode 24 Director's Cut

  1. The scene of Asuka and Hikari sleeping together contrasts directly with the scene between Shinji and Kaworu in the next episode. Asuka sobs into her pillow and is facing away from Hikari, while Hikari looks straight up and doesn't look at her when she talks. While Hikari seems somewhat sad about Asuka but not overly concerned for her, Asuka is too ashamed of herself to face Hikari. A previous scene between Shinji and Kaji had both of them facing opposite ways, showing a reluctance to talk to each other.
  2. There has been speculation that Ritsuko and her grandmother are speaking in code about Kaji's death during their phone conversation about the cat (see Episode 15 for more details). However, the evidence of this seems to be nowhere near sufficient.
  3. Armisael, along with Arael in the preceding episode and Tabris/Kaworu in the next, forms a bizarre triad. In addition to communicating with human beings, Armisael represents an Angel's halo, and along with Arael and Tabris forms a complete angel- halo, wings and human form.
  4. When Misato sits down on Shinji's bed, a chair in the background is strategically placed so that, from our camera angle, it looks like a large phallus protruding from Shinji's groin. As Misato sits right in front of the chair, it is quite likely that a sexual message was intended.
  5. When Misato enters Shinji's room after Rei's death she says 'This is just about all I can do for you.' ADV's English dub mis-translates this as 'I want you to know that I'm here for you.' It's unclear whether they were deliberately trying to hide her sexual intent, of if this was just a flub.
  6. When the Director's or New Production cut of Ep. 23' was originally released, mysterious images flashed off and on in the Reiquarium during Ritsuko's tirade. (See Analysis of the Episode 23' Reiquarium Images for details.) These images were absent in the on-air version. For some unknown reason, these images were removed for the Renewal version, making it resemble the on-air version, although the other changes to the sequence still stood, such as the extra Eva remains and the larger Rei tank.
